NSW & ACT

The Wilderness Society NSW & ACT acknowledges the Gadigal people on whose country we live and work. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge the ongoing important role First Nations peoples play in our communities and in connecting us to land and water.

The Wilderness Society of NSW sprang up in the early 1980s, after which a Newcastle group branched out to dedicate itself to local and national campaigns. Now, the two have combined to form the NSW & ACT branch.

The Wilderness Society NSW & ACT has been involved in a range of campaigns for NSW: to have a Wilderness Act; protect Barrington Tops; achieve a long-term pause on old growth forest logging from Newcastle to the Queensland border; create a Port Stephens Marine Park and protect the Williams Valley from the Tillegra Dam. From 1998 to 2001, Wilderness Society worked with Worimi peoples to protect a sacred and unique sand dune ecosystem from Stockton Bight to Anna Bay with the creation of a national park.

We continue to connect with local communities to protect the remarkable natural landscapes of NSW. Today, we’re fighting to protect precious native forests along the Eastern Coast and Ranges of NSW from industrial logging and land clearing, and advocating for Coricudgy and Nullo Mountain state forests to be included in our National Heritage listing.
