Dr Kirsty Howey - CEO

Dr. Howey is an environmentalist and strategist with more than two decades of experience driving policy, campaigns and real change for nature across Australia. Since 2020, she has served as Executive Director of the Environment Centre NT, the Northern Territory's peak conservation organisation, leading campaigns against mass fossil fuel expansion, deforestation and the destruction of some of Australia's most extraordinary rivers and ecosystems.

Before taking the ECNT helm, Dr. Howey built her career as a leading native title and land rights lawyer. She holds a doctorate exploring the intersection of environment, extractive development and First Nations rights in northern Australia, and is an established author.

While much has been achieved over the past five decades, the need to defend wilderness has never been greater. Around Australia, the destruction of forests, rivers, reefs and wildlife continues at an alarming pace, making our shared commitment to protecting nature more important than ever.

Kirsty brings the experience, vision and determination to lead the Wilderness Society into its next chapter. She understands that lasting conservation victories are built through courageous campaigning, strong partnerships and the unwavering support of people like you.

As we begin our next 50 years, we do so with optimism. We believe there are many more victories ahead for Australia's wild places and species, and we are excited to have Kirsty leading us into that future.
