Statement: Draft standards are a step backwards for nature

Today the Albanese Government released its long-awaited draft National Environment Standards.

These standards will guide decisions on projects that impact forests, oceans, wildlife and the climate across Australia.

Despite a promise of meaningful reform, the draft standards are a step backwards for nature.

Biodiversity Policy and Campaign Manager for the Wilderness Society, Melanie Audrey, said:

“The draft National Environment Standards are a step backwards and will not protect wildlife from extinction or stop the destruction of forests.

“The Albanese Government promised strong reforms, but these standards are riddled with weak language, loopholes and fail to set clear red lines to protect nature.

“They focus on process, not the outcomes needed to actually safeguard forests, oceans, wildlife and the climate.

“Australians expected clear, strong rules, but these standards fall short and must go back to the drawing board.”
